Belinda's Selvage Purse

Belinda of Sydney, Australia created this selvage coin purse and she's offering it for sale for $20 in her Etsy store called Seventh Sphere. There you'll see many more handbags in her fresh, modern fabrics and beautiful workmanship. It's definitely worth a visit.

Check out the selvage with the Chinese writing (above). The Heather Bailey selvage looks distinctive too, like everything else Heather does. I like the zig-zag stitch done with variegated thread too. Nice job, Belinda!

Asterisk Quilts Down Under

On July 3 some of our quilting sisters from Down Under got together to make Asterisk Quilts.
The members of Goldfield's Quilters who participated are: Margaret, Rachel, Brenda, Kay, Chris, Faye, Lorraine, Pattie, and Alison.

Margaret made the quilt shown at the top using 1800's reproduction fabrics, her favorite. Pattie made the quilt above, putting some big flowers right in the middle. Great idea.

Rachel made the quilt above using a pack of fat quarters. Don't these asterisks look like snowflakes? Alison made the quilt below for her grandson. Nice bright colors.

And here is the group. See more photos on their blog: www.goldfieldsquilters.wordpress.com.

You can click on the link in the sidebar to see how to make this surprisingly easy block. Feel free to use it for your group. Send photos to karen@onlinequiltmuseum.com.

Meet Janelle from Australia

Janelle from Ellenbrook, WA, Australia made this fantastic selvage bag. She decided to use selvages on one side only. The fabric she found for the other side is perfect! I like the pink polka dots on the selvage side. Nice!
Janelle has a blog with two of her sewing friends: www.threadsoffriendship.blogspot.com.

Selvages in "Down Under Quilts" Magazine

Have you seen the new issue of Down Under Quilts from Australia? They're featuring selvages! Erica Spinks' authored the articles, and her beautiful selvage quilt is on the front cover. She used a solid beige fabric with her selvages, and she added hand quilting with black thread to echo the selvages. Terrific idea. This is the first selvage quilt to appear on the cover of a magazine!

Above, do you recognize my Tree of Life selvage quilt and Jodie Carleton's selvage frock? They also show Jodie's selvage chair on another page. Below see the selvage shopping sack by Linda Robertus.

Below, see my "Twilight Star" selvage quilt (left) and Linda Robertus' "Salvaged Selvedges" (right).

You can get a free digital edition of this magazine at: http://www.creativelivingmedia.com.au/.

Quilter Found on Mars?

No, this is Erica Spinks' neighborhood at 6:45am yesterday in Australia. They are having a dust storm and this is the exact color of the sky. This is some of the best weather I've ever heard of for quilting. (Tough on farmers and people with athsma, though.) Check out Erica's blog: http://creativedabbling.blogspot.com/. Other Australian bloggers have photos too.

Jodie Carleton Featured in Ready Made

Have you seen the September/October issue of Ready Made magazine? Take a look at page 16 to see a selvage bag by selvage genius Jodie Carleton of Australia. (Check out some of her truly incredible selvage creations in the sidebar at right.) I think this magazine should have featured her frock or her chair! But I guess they wanted to show something easy that readers could whip up in an afternoon. (How do you attach those handles?)

Update: Jodie says, "The handles are a fake leather and they had existing holes, I just hand sewed them on - using a big thimble.- It was a pain to be honest but they do look good!"

See Jodie's blog at: http://www.vintagericrac.blogspot.com/. The magazine's site is: http://www.readymade.com/.

If you have made a selvage item, why not send a photo to a magazine for possible publication? What's the worst that could happen?

Linda Robertus' Neighborhood

Linda Robertus of Australia sent these photos of her neighborhood. I love traveling around the world visiting quilters this way, don't you? She tells about her neighborhood below:

"I thought you might like to see the view from my sewing room window. The jacarandas are in bloom - the best time of the year in Brisbane! The second photo is at the end of our street, next to the railway station (we live in an innercity suburb). It's where I take the train to work 3 days a week, and the last photo is the view I have from the train: the City of Brisbane along the river. I love this city! "
Thank you, Linda, for this "visit." See Linda's blogs at: http://www.goingtobrissy.blogspot.com/ and http://q-linda.blogspot.com/

Dianne's Selvage Cards

Dianne Cahill of Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia has been making these little selvage gift tags to go with fat quarters that she gives to her sewing group friends. Are quilters thoughtful and generouos people, or what?

Her friends bring her their selvages, so Dianne will probably be making a big quilt soon!

Isn't it funny that we always thought using a selvage in a quilt would lead to something terrible, like shrinking and twisting? But they are fine, even after washing. You can use them in a utility quilt if you want, and it will last a long long time even with lots of machine washing and drying.
