Saddest Quilt Block

Isn't this the saddest quilt block you've ever seen? The other blocks in the quilt have the same broken heart design with different words.
More blocks from this quilt are featured on Cheryl's blog: Fiber Arts and Quilting

Gee, now I feel like I need to cheer you all up.
(Read JoAnne's comment for a different take on this quilt block.)

This pep talk quilt was on exhibit in Sisters, Oregon, and featured on the Bring the Monkey blog.

Barbara Brackman's Snake Quilts

Isn't this a stunning antique Snake quilt? This is just one of 16 that Barbara Brackman is showing on her blog. She's been collecting photos of snake quilt variations for several years. I like how the cheddar blocks and the red block brighten this one up. And the high contrast snake segments look great. I've never considered making a Snake quilt until now. Another addition to my "To Make" list!

If you've made a Snake quilt, please email a photo (karengriska@optonline.net) and I'll post it here. If we get a bunch it will make an awesome exhibit for the Online Quilt Museum too.

Antique Applique Quilt

This stunning applique quilt is from Stella Rubin Antiques. I wonder if the quilter started by making the four flower and vase panels, then thought of the awesome sashing later. It looks like possibly more than one person worked on this quilt because some of the shapes are neater than others. Do you think she (they) liked how it came out? I do. It was well cared for and not used much judging by it's good condition. It was found in California but probably made in the South around 1920. It measures 68" x 80." Don't you wish this quilt could talk?

Veteran's Day Patriotic Quilt

Today we stop to honor our veterans.
If you are a veteran, we thank you for your service to our country.
This antique patriotic Tree of Life quilt was made around 1835, possibly in West Virginia. It measures 64" x 82." The red triangles are 1 3/8" on the long side. It's covered with dense hand-quilting. This quilt is offered for sale at Rocky Mountain Quilts in Maine (she used to live in the Rockies) for $4,400. Wouldn't that price astonish the maker of this quilt!

Antique Quilt Offered on eBay for $5,000

This quilt was made by Melissa Gardner in 1881. We know this because she embroidered a label on the back of the quilt. The opening bid is $4,995. This looks like a museum quality quilt: classic color combination, fabrics still nice and bright, extensive quilting, expert workmanship. Wow!

Wouldn't Melissa be astonished to see her quilt selling for this price!

Julie Silber's Amazing Antique Quilts

Here are some wonderful antique quilts from Julie Silber's blog. As you probably know, Julie is a quilt expert, curator of the Esprit Amish quilt collection and a buyer and seller of museum quality quilts. You will love the quilts on her blog.
.
Does the block style (above) look vaguely familiar? I've seen photos like this tile quilt before and I think that was somewhere in my subconscious when I made my raw-edge quilt recently. The antique quilt pictured is needleturn applique, not raw-edge. Also, these pieces are curvy, and mine are straight edged. The fabrics are different too, but the overall "feel" is similar. The heart adds a nice focal point. I wonder what the border looks like.

Julie suspects that the inspiration for this fantastic red and white quilt (above) was crocheted doilies. Have you ever seen a border like this? I love it. I bet all those little circles are stuffed.

Hey, red bird, put that flowerbud back!
Don't you hate it when applique birds mess with your quilt design?
