Selvage Quilt Will Warm a Scholar's Heart

Edda from Michigan made this beatiful selvage quilt and she's donating it to a wonderful program called Seita Scholars. It supports young adults who have grown up in the foster care program by providing an education at Western Michigan University, all expenses paid. One of these young people will receive Edda's quilt too. This is her contribution to her guild's service project for next year. What a wonderful idea!

South Bronx Charity Quilts

My friend Victoria Findlay Wolfe (right) is looking for 700 finished quilts for a South Bronx project which will give quilts to formerly homeless families who are moving into transitional housing. She has 300 quilts already, and is planning to reach her goal by November! Read more  here: BumblebeansBasics. I'm going to make a quilt for this project. I'll show you when it's done.

Margaret's Hope Chest

The mission of Margaret's Hope Chest is to bring hope to people enduring hopeless situations by giving them a handmade quilt. It was started in honor of Margaret, a grandmother who was murdered at the age of 81.    There is also a blog where you can follow along and see quilts like the beautiful one above. You will enjoy the stories on these two sites, and you can see how to get involved too.

Again, thanks to JoAnne in California for sharing this heart-warming link with us.

Quilts for Alzheimer's Patients

Jeffree Itrich at the University of California San Diego is spearheading a project to give lap-sized quilts to Alzheimer's research study patients throughout the USA. So far she has collected 600 quilts and she has recipients for a lot more! Jeffree lost her mom to severe dementia, and she says this project really warms her heart. Can you tell from the photo? She's a quilter too.

If you want to read more about this project, or to donate a quilt, click here. Another good article about the project can be found here.

Take a look at Nancy's wonderful selvage quilts on her Flickr page. And what a treasure trove of quilty inspiration her page is! Nancy lives in PA so you know she's enjoying some good quilting weather.

Iraqi Bundles of Love (by Oct. 1)

Quilters are putting together bundles of fabrics and thread to send to our soldiers who will give them to women in Iraq for making quilts and other things for their families. Visit the Iraqi Bundles of Love website to learn more. Leave a message and ask for the address if you'd like to send a bundle of love.

Matt, the soldier who is responsible for delivering the bundles to remote areas, has a mother, sisters, wife and daughter who are all quilters. So he knows how important these bundles are.

Here are some recipients with their bundles, a women's sewing co-op.

Selvage Quilt for a Bear!

Edda in Portage, MI has finished her third selvage project, a table topper. This quilt will be wrapped around a stuffed bear at Christmas-time and donated to a charity with many others made by her guild. What a great idea.

Beautiful job, Edda! I love your colors.

Quilts for Nashville

My dear friend Pam lives near Nashville. Their house suffered serious damage in the recent flood. But she's not complaining, she's collecting quilts to give to families who had even more seroius damage and lost all their personal household belongings.

Pam is a quilter with a big heart, and if you donate a quilt, she will find just the right family who will treasure it. You can reach her directly at: pam@realwomenquilt.com.

Quilts for Kids - Abruzzo, Italy Earthquake

(This is just an example of a child's quilt that's quick and easy to make. It's from: www.noveltyquiltfabric.com.)
Italian quilter Roberta Sperandio was happy to hear from so many of you who expressed an interest in makinig a quilt for a child impacted by the recent earthquakes in Abruzzo, Italy. So, here is an update on her "Thousand Colors for Abruzzo" project:

Roberta is asking for finished quilts (a colorful Linus-type "blankie") for children ages 3-6 years old. They should be about 40" x 60," and made out of cotton fabric with poly batting. Since they don't have dryers, she asks that we not use wool, fleece, flannel, etc.

The quilts need to be there by July 15, and since it may take a few weeks to ship to Italy, we need to get our machines humming asap. She and her husband Vincent will deliver the quilts personally.

The mailing address for the quilts is:

Roberta Sperandio
Mille Colori per l'Abruzzo
Via Due Agosto. 24
31022 Preganziol, Treviso
Italy

On the customs document, just write: "Gift: Quilt for Earthquake Children of Abruzzo"

Her blog is: http://www.simplyninepatch.blogspot.com/
Her email is: roberta.sperandio@alice.it
