Brenda got the idea from: http://www.sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=2311. In Amanda Jean's tutorial, she makes the quilt sandwich first, then the piece is quilted as she sews the patches on. She was making a doll quilt. With my blocks, I just sewed the patches to the foundation. Sandwiching and quilting later. My quilt will be larger and it will have a border.
I thought this would make a great Block of the Month for my guild, Empire Quilters. But I need a good name. "Raw-Edge Mosaic Collage" is too generic and boring. I want something more fun. Any ideas?
To see the directions, visit my other blog: http://www.empirebom.blogspot.com/. Basically, you just cut a 12" square from white or off-white fabric. Cut your patches, use a gluestick to adhere, then machine topstitch. Do you think this should be regular needle-turn applique instead of raw-edge? I think I'll finish it and wash it before deciding.
It reminds me of a the pages in a stamp collectors book, so how about naming the block "Stamp Collection"?
ReplyDelete@ Kucki88 ~ great minds think alike! My first thought when I saw this was a stamp collection so I agree . . . Stamp Collection
ReplyDeleteCat
I also immediately thought of stamps. Maybe "stamp album block" ?
ReplyDeletehow cool!
ReplyDeleteI thought of "Shadow Box" since there are many items displayed. But to paraphrase the old line... 'a rose by any name...', it's a winner no matter the name.
ReplyDeleteSarah
I thought of a stamp collection too.
ReplyDeleteThese two blocks are just too fun and funky to do anything but raw edge
ReplyDeleteRaw edge fits in with the feeling that these images are favorites you've just snatched from your stash to display just because they make you happy.
They sure make me happy - makes me smile.
Hugs & ♥♥♥s,
Gerry
Like many of your other followers I just thought of stamps.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun way to use up small scraps.
Fun blocks. I thought of tiles instead of stamps but I think there is already a block called Tiles. Not 100% sure though.
ReplyDeleteI also like "Stamp Collection". This quilt reminds me of some "I Spy" quilts I have made for baby gifts.
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought of a scrap book and "a few of my favorite things" when I looked at your blocks. It would be a great way to commemorate an event, holiday, even journaling the making of a quilt!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I like the clean edge of this awesome idea for displaying your favorite collection. I thought it reminded me of stamps too, so how about naming the block "Stamp Assembly"
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that came in my mind was Raindrops and Roses al a Julie Andrews- these are a few of my favourite things. What great fun. Will have to see what I have got now.
ReplyDeleteShirley.
I love it whatever you end up naming it will be perfect!
ReplyDeleteMaybe something simple like "Patches". It reminds me of all the patches I've sewn on my daughters scout uniforms over the years.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of combining this block with selvage blocks. I would call this block "Favorite Pieces" or "pieces of life"
ReplyDelete"Patches of life" or even "favorite patches"
ReplyDeleteI see postage stamps, so the first commenter is right on the money. I love the way you pieced that!
ReplyDeleteI am with the majority on this one too as I thought they looked like postage stamps or rubber stamps, but since they are made with NOVELTY fabrics, it could be called something like "What a Novel Idea" block. Or "Novelty Stamps"? Hey I just though how I would use the selvages...how about sew a selvage around each little novelty fabric piece like a sashing or border? Hmm now you've got my brain working with ideas to try a block/mini quilt like this!
ReplyDeleteif you keep the edges as is, maybe "freyed favorites"
ReplyDeleteMy initial thought was "Windows" or something like "Windows of My Mind"? All along the same idea as the stamps. Love the concept!
ReplyDeleteTo me it looks like a ticker tape quilt with pictures....Maybe call it "Favorite Things" since it seems to be images that capture the heart of the creator???
ReplyDelete"Bits of bittersweet life", or simply, "bits of life" which is what first came to mind.
ReplyDeleteHow about my favorite things block. It looks like a collection of someones favorite bits of different fabrics.
ReplyDeleteThese results are awesome... so many cool things go get our imaginations working! I came up with "memory patches" for a name. I love all the ideas that have been shared!
ReplyDeleteit reminds me of a colonial era "print room".
ReplyDeleteif the edges are unfinished, they will fray some, right? So maybe Raggy Patches or raggy stamp?
ReplyDeleteYou know how we tend to put all those neat little special mementos in a Curio Cabinet? This is like that
ReplyDeleteso how about Curio Cloth
No matter what you call it....it WILL be fabulous!
Great idea.... it reminds me of those lovely office walls covered in pictures...... maybe something like 'portraits'........
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blogs.....
It's already called "Ticker Tape" AmandaJean from Crazy Mom Quilts invented it and posted a tutorial here http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=2311
ReplyDeleteher blog can be found here http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/
Hi Karen,
ReplyDeleteLike Char, I, too, thought of scouting patches or badges like we had to earn for various tasks.
How about Quilter's Badges?
Vicky F
mumbo jumbo mosaic
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought "STAMPS' when I saw your post...even before reading it.
ReplyDeleteI thought of three things,
ReplyDelete1. Collage Block
2. Cubby Block (you know those little square places you put things in when you were in kindergarten.
3. Niche Block (everything has it's own niche.
It's a lot like crazymomquilts' ticker tape quilt, just done in blocks. It is one I want to try.
ReplyDeleteA couple block challenge name suggestions: Prosaic Mosaic or Style Tiles.
