31 Spools in 2011!
Every time I finished off a spool of thread in 2011, it went into this green polka dotted bowl. It was a 31-spool year. This is the first year I've counted my spools, so I don't know if it was a "good" year or not. I'm saving them this year too.
You're saving the empty spools...what is your plan for the empty spools? There are lots of those around here!
That's different to measure your sewing by # of empty spools. I made a quilt for my father for Christmas and he asked me how many "miles" of sewing was in it?
clean 'em up, glue & wrap them with colorful selveges, and tada! You have ornaments for next year's trees. (or some really horrible earrings from the '80's lol)
I've been throwing empty spools into a ziplock baggie with the idea that maybe someday a nursery school teacher will want them for a project. Meanwhile my little great-grandson can be amused with them ... for about five minutes. Then he's off running again. I haven't counted.
I used to save mine and I threaded them on string and hung them like streamers around my old sewing room. Then we had to move and there was no point in packing 'fluff' (I had too many boxes of fabric to move as it was!)
What a clever idea! Ahh, but it wouldn't work for me. I use Aurifil thread on the cone - like 6,000 yards. I'd have to count last year as a "No Spool" year. Now THAT's depressing.
I'm wondering how many I use each year too and am now saving the empty spools! You can donate these to a creative reuse center, if you don't plan on making something out of them!
You have the neatest blog, you find such interesting things!
I am a collector of my own spools, guess I'm another one waiting for a nursery school teacher to mention wanting them. Though I've never really settled on a thread brand so mine are all different sizes.
I saved my mt spools from 2011 in a vintage blue mason jar. I will have to get them out and count them. I will photograph and post on my blog tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteThere's gotta be a use for the empties. Some crafty person is wishing they had a bunch of spools.
ReplyDeleteI'd say you had a very productive year!
Hugs...
Love it!
ReplyDeleteFun idea. I remember the wooden spool curio cabinets of yore. Your husband could make some outdoor furniture, maybe?

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun way to see how much you have accomplished! I like the idea of the tree ornaments too!
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to do this for 2012. I found a jar a few weeks ago. Doesn't it feel great to empty a spool?
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea. I've always wondered how much thread I use.
