Where Are All the Dresses?

I used to wear a dress every day to grammar school. (You 20-somethings can Google "grammar school.") Then in high school it was short skirts (only 1/2 yard needed to make one of those). Jeans in college. Suits at work. That was a long time ago. I don't know when I forgot about skirts and jumpers and dresses, but I can't remember an occasion in 2011 when I wore a dress. I like them though. People are generally much more casual now than in years past.

Are dresses still alive and well anyplace in the world? Let me know. (Of course, there are selvage dresses!!)

  1. I wear a dress or skirt every week to church- as much as I love to be casual, it's nice to wear a dress!

  2. I like dresses, but am not much a garment sewer. (I have issues with symmetry.) And I like above-the-knee dresses. But...when you're 5'8" the above-the-knee off-the-rack dresses are too short!! I own...3.

  4. I wear skirts a lot in the summer. I don't really direct my sewing talent at clothes anymore. I live and work casually and happily so.

  5. Yep, pants not allowed for girls in elementary school in the late 1960s! Then yes to the mini skirt or jumper -- paired with the perfect Go Go boots, of course.

  6. I absolutely love dresses, and skirts too! I'd wear them all the time if the weather permitted. But I sure do have a difficult time finding them in appropriate styles. When was the last time you saw a pretty dress with SLEEVES or a neckline that wasn't cut to the navel?! It's really frustrating to not be able to buy them ready-made. Even the pattern companies aren't styling them for modesty. Oh, for "the good old days!"

  7. I love dresses and skirts. I think it's so feminine and pretty. I wear them for church and mostly in the summer. I think you can look casual in a fun skirt as well.

  8. I love wearing a dress and see it as my "easy out" when getting dressed because I don't have to plan out an outfit. It is a top and bottom all rolled into one! One of my goals is to learn to sew a great dress. But that will be going at the bottom of my to be done list for the time being and quilting will stay at the top.

  10. I got three cuts of rayon batik fabric for Christmas from my wonderful sister to make dresses. Wish me luck! I haven't made clothes in a long time.

  12. I wear a dress every week to church. I also wear a dress to every wedding I attend. I want others to know I regard a marriage as a sacred, formal event. :) I have a lot of skirts and dresses.

  15. I generally don't wear dresses unless I'm going to a wedding. My daughter loves dresses and skirts and wears one to high school a few times a week. Adorable with tights and boots!

  16. Sadly, I have stopped wearing them too, except for funerals and weddings. When I was in school
no slacks were allowed for girls and hose were worn with garter belts...
ahhhh the good old days :0). Yes, this was public schools in the 60's :0).

    Happy Sewing

  17. Dresses have made a major comeback here in the UK. A few years ago I did not wear any but now I must have over 12; including 3 60s style dresses, 2 special occasion and 3 for work.
