What is This? A Sugar Scuttle. Thanks!
I found this little silverplate item at an antiques fair and of course turned it into a pincushion. But now what do I call it when I list it on Etsy? Does anyone know what this is called?
It's a sugar scuttle. It was originally used for serving sugar. It probably originally had a spoon or scoop to match. This page has some similar items -- towards the middle:
A "sugar scuttle"! The things you learn when you're a selvage quilter!
Hmmm, I have a pair of things that I cannot identify. Maybe I should send a photo to Karen and someone will know what they are. They belonged to my great-grandmother's brother and I have no idea what they are.
is it a salt cellar?

A container for sugar cubes is what I was thinking. I didn't know the word "scuttle". Thanks Dorthy. Good luck with your listing. It is very cute.
ReplyDeleteDorothy is right! I found lots of them on Ebay.
ReplyDeleteYep , a sugar scuttle ,
ReplyDeleteI don't know what its official name is but I think all the other ladies decided on a sugar scuttle.
ReplyDeleteI would call it a 'Vintage silver server' and let the new owner decide on it's history.
