It's so exciting to make a new quilt top! You get an idea and start sewing. You watch it grow on the design wall. Then serendipity happens and you get something you didn't expect. Usually that's a good surprise. Yup, it's all fun and games until the top is finished.
The journey between that moment and having a finished quilt is more "uphill" for me. I'm trying to get serious about finishing a big pile of quilt tops now. I'm telling you this so I won't give in to the temptation to keep piecing tops. You're my "accountability group." Haha.
So, as The Little Train that Could said, "I think I can! I think I can!"
Karen, I am SO with you! I always considered a quilt "finished" when I had the top pieced. Now that I have my own longarm, I have to QUILT the darn things, too! I set myself a goal to quilt and bind 30 quilts between Halloween and New Years. So far, I'm right on track with 5 quilted and 4 bound. My reward when I get a quilt bound is, I get to piece the rest of that day!
ReplyDeleteI know EXACTLY how you FEEL!
ReplyDeleteThat is why I quilt by chequebook!
ReplyDeleteThat's a mighty pretty pile of quilt tops awaiting your quilting, Karen. Well worth the uphill effort. They are going to look gorgeous, and I can't wait to see your progress. You go, girl!
ReplyDeleteI hear you, i totally stall when it comes to turning quilt tops into finished tops! Good luck with getting some finishes happening.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. And I remember an older lady in Empire Quilters who decided to only piece tops and give away or sell her tops to people who wanted them. I understand completely and have thought of her often and wondered if I'm old enough to get by with that.
ReplyDeleteThose are beauties! I'm no help with regards to your dilemma. My best plan is making quilt tops willy-nilly and then quilting them as the need for the quilt arises (and not a moment sooner!).
ReplyDeleteYou are singing to the choir. I think I have about a dozen quilt tops draped over hangers in the closet just waiting to be quilted. But, I just got 2 of them finished in the last few weeks, so I feel like I'm headed in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that! It's what I've been meaning to do for years. But I'm sure you'll do it. Then maybe I can too!
ReplyDeleteJust this week I finished 25 childrens's quilts for the local firefighters' toy & quilt drive. I thought I could would start a new quilt until I found 8 throw size quilt tops to get finished for the local shelter! If I kept them I wouldn't know where to store them. Ahh, all this fabric is leaving the house, maybe I can buy more?
ReplyDeleteI love your green & white Election Day quilt! It's so Irish!
I've lost count of my UFOs!! Pieced, but not quilted, partially pieced, fabric, pattern and backing all nicely organized in a project box or one of those super big zip-lock bags (love those- hang them on two hangers in the closet the entire project in one place). I work outside the home 40+ hours a week, and right now my right hand is in a cast for another 3 weeks- but I am with you on the getting serious part. I need to do some Goal Setting too!! Thanks for the nudge!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for you to experience the "downhill side" of that mantra! "I thought I could, I thought I could, I thought I could!"
