The quilt above was made by the Tentmakers of Cairo, Egypt. They are sold along the "Street of the Tentmakers" shown below. There will be an exhibit of these colorful quilts at the AQS Show in Grand Rapids, MI, August 14-17, 2013. You can see the quilters working, and there will be pieces for sale too. Read more about this here. Wow! I'd like to see this.
Have you seen these quilts? What did you think?
I saw these quilters sewing in Paducah and was fascinated by their process. No fancy gadgets...just ordinary scissors, chalk, needle & thread and a jumble of fabric scraps. They work magic. Don't miss it!
ReplyDeleteI think that the quilts are incredible. I would love to go to Cairo myself to see them.

They had an exhibit at the AQS show in Paducah this April. I stood and watched while a man appliqued a flower with many petals onto a place on his block. He was lighting fast and used a big clunkly scissors for snipping away any excess fabric from his applique. They do not cut the shape of the petal, just a hunk of fabric big enough to get the job done. The shape it takes is all done by him manipulating the fabric with his needle and thread. It was amazing and very fast.
ReplyDeleteAmazing - fantastic - thank you for sharing!
