If you're looking to add new skills to your quilting in 2011, this might be just the ticket. Enter a comment for the random drawing for this book. Tell us where you stand with paper piecing at the moment. I'll go first: My sister Eileen showed me how to do it, and I tried it and thought it was pretty cool, but I haven't done it since. I do love a pickle dish design and those long "Karen Stone-style" points, so maybe it's high time to return to paper piecing.
Wow! I've never been the first to comment!
ReplyDeleteI have made 2 quilts using the paper piecing method. I'd love to try a flying geese quilt this way! Thanks for the chance!
I've made a NY Beauty wallhanging and a couple of small Mariner's Compass ones using the "paper piecing from the top" method. Have also done some of Cynthia England's "picture piecing" plus a couple of Karen Stone patterns. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a wonderful and vibrant story quilt I saw at Expo 86 in Vancouver, Canada... love the colours and the *life* in the quilt on this book cover!
ReplyDeleteWonderful giveaway, thanks! I've never done flying geese, I think it's time to begin... :)
ReplyDeleteFlying geese are my favourites but I'm a no-hoper at foundation paper piecing.
ReplyDeleteI've done some Karen C. Stone blocks--that's pretty much it. Keep thinking I'll try some hand done hexagons, but haven't. Plan to do a pickle dish someday...
ReplyDeleteLove those geese@
ReplyDeleteThe cover of the book ks very interesting. I´ve done some small projects with paper piecing.
ReplyDeleteI nearly finished a new york beauty wallhanging in memory of my late cousin but I did it it orange and purple.. hmmm... and then I couldn't find a fabric to put in the circles! So it's sitting in a box. But I loved paper piecing. so exact!
ReplyDeleteWoluld love to win the book!! I have a kit to do pp, but I'm too scared to fail... so its just laying there... so I think practice is needed here :o)
ReplyDeleteSusanne
un altro bellissimo giveaway...partecipo volentieri!
ReplyDeleteciao!
I love Flying Geese and the preview is very intersting !
ReplyDeleteI learn PP years ago & use it for hard piecing.
What a fantastic looking book. I used to do lots of paper piecing - it's so accurate for points but I've only used it on smaller projects like wallhangings.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win.
I've done some PP and while I love the accuracy I hate picking out the little bits of paper!!
ReplyDeleteThe book looks great - I adore Flying Geese
You definitely do have to return to paper piecing, Karen! I love it. I've been doing it for 16 years and I teach it.
ReplyDeleteI do like to do Paper Piecing, I just hate to take the paper off afterwards.
ReplyDeleteI learned how to paper piece a few years ago and love the accuracy that is achieved with this method. I've made 2 quilts using this method and am about ready to begin another.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book.
ReplyDeletethanks for the chance to win it.
I tried it when I read about the basics in an old multi-craft book I found in the bargain book section...but I was only twelve or so and I did it very, very badly. I haven't tried it since, but I've certainly seen some finished works that make me want to!
ReplyDeleteI've made a lot of paperpiecing, and it would be nice with some new inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this great giveaway!
those geese on the cover look amazing!
ReplyDeleteI love paper piecing pattern and made a lot of it. My last project in paper piecing was a little chrismas cat.
ReplyDeleteBritta
Hi!! I have made a few wall hangings, but with very basic desings in paper piecing. I love it!! Just a short time ago I tried to do curved flying gueese. Looked for tutorials on the web but did not have much luck. A few blogging friends and I struggled with that for a while and got something done...that even looks curvy! haha! But I would love to learn more about paper piecing and this type of free forms. Thanks for the give away and greetings from Argentina!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy paper piecing. Thank you for the chance to win this book.
ReplyDeleteThat book looks awesome! I'd love to win it! I've done some minor bits of paper piecing here and there, enough to try out some blocks that ended up as pot holders. I've even taught my Mother-in-law how to do it. There are some new techniques out there I've wanted to try that don't involve ripping paper.
ReplyDeleteThis book looks like it will offer some great inspiration. There's always that time when we need a nudge! I've done alot of paper piecing because I love the accuracy. Thanks for the opportunity to win this book.
ReplyDeleteI have done some paper piecing. I've used it to teach beginning quilters who don't want their first quilt to look like a first quilt.
ReplyDeleteI really like working with paper technology and have even made the flight of geese in curved, there is a tutorial on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI consider it very important to learn new things from experts.
Thanks for the chance to win the gift.
My mom is an expert and loves paper piecing. I just can't "seam" to get it! I would love to improve my skills and really learn this method!
ReplyDeleteI have never done more then a few practice blocks, though I want to try more.
ReplyDeleteI teach paper piecing at the shop where I work. I love the way it lets me make blocks that would be a bear with templets. Blocks like New York Beauty or Mariners Compass. It also gives me the freedom to design a block of any size to fit a certain space if I need it.
ReplyDeleteI like to paper piece because it helps me be more accurate. I haven't done any lately though. I would love to make a Pickle Dish or New York Beauty someday!
ReplyDeleteI haven't done any paper piecing though it is something I keep thinking I'll try. Maybe this book will be the push I need!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.

OOoh, this book looks wonderfully interesting!
ReplyDeleteI have been working on a paper-pieced quilt called Flying Geese in the Forest. I like the preciseness of it and would like to do more.
Would absolutely love to have this book.
I once made a pp picture of my friends dog for a remembrance pillow. It was fun but a lot of work. Also very accurate.
ReplyDeleteJudy
I've done it/do it and think it is a great way to use up tiny pieces of scraps and also to get really sharp points.
ReplyDeleteThis book looks awesome, I have seen some of her work online. thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI have just started learning to paper-piece while working on my Dear Jane. We are doing each block twice. Once with templates and once with paper-piecing and then comparing the 2.

I am a paper piecer and I am addicted. It's almost all I do. My first project was a Noah's Ark quilt with 50 paper pieced animals in 4 inch blocks. It's a book titled A quilter's Ark by Margaret Rolfe.
ReplyDeletePatti
I saw a while ago a quilt called Stairway to Heaven (not the cat one) which featured geese most definitely flying in an arc through the quilt. I have always thought it would be too difficult. I have done a little paper piecing with miniature quilts, but nothing as interesting as the quilt on the cover of the book.
ReplyDeleteI took a simple paper piecing class many years ago, but I never finished the block. I love the quilt on the book's cover, though, so I'd like to try again.
ReplyDeleteI have made some small paper pieced projects, but it is on my must-do-in-my-lifetime list to do a New York Beauty with the curves. This book would be lots of fun!
ReplyDeleteOh... what a great giveaway... thanks!
ReplyDeletePaper piecing? Right now it is on my immediate "learning radar". That means I have a book checked out from the library on how to do it. The book is going back becuase I can't make heads nor tails on how to do it from that book.
I'm thinking I would love the intuitive designs one can create through paper piecing... Lately my fascination has been art quilting and thread painting. I think paper piecing would be a way to explore that avenue.
So I guess I'm a paper-piecing virgin... who is willing to take the plunge.
I admire the spiky points and precision, but I've had a love/hate affair with paper piecing. thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying really hard not to order this book...why well because it will send me on a whole new journey in my quilting life.....that said I sure do want this book it looks like so much fun!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chance :)
Paper piecing is addictive! The first ones I did were blocks for potholders. I would love to learn how to paper piece curvy flying geese. Thanks for the give away!
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely love this book!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never used paper piecing. Would love to try it though.
ReplyDeletePaper piecing is a must on some things if you want sharp points on difficult piecing. But it's also more work to rip off the paper, and your brain must think sort of backwards too. I don't paper piece often, but it's a good skill to know when you need it.
ReplyDeleteI still have a love hate relationship with paper piecing. I am starting way to complicated.
ReplyDeleteWould love to try the flying geese.
I made a log cabin wall hanging for a client and the logs were only 1/4" wide so paper piecing was the only way to do it and have it come out perfect. I actually found it a little relaxing as I didn't have to think about what came next, I just added the next log.
ReplyDeleteI've done a bit of paper piecing, on the fence with it tho. I have a few friends that do it and they have some beautiful things!
ReplyDeleteI went to Amazon to check out Gail Garber's book ~ I think it would be a lovely addition to my collection of quilt books!
thanks so much for the giveaway!
I'm currently doing a Quilt-along using paper-pieced pineapple blocks with Hawaiian fabrics. Iwas intimidated to start as I had never done it before. But I found it easy once I got started & love the instant perfection you get
ReplyDeleteI learned in the early days of GEnie online - reading how to do it online, drawing simple designs from the descriptions and trying them out. :-) Read about rubber stamping the designs on muslin back then and wished that I could afford one of those stamps. Then I discovered Jodie Davis. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a great book. Really like those curvy flying geese. The only paper piecing I have done is with a few Dear Jane blocks...definitely need some pointers.
ReplyDeleteI love paper piecing and have made several quilts using this method.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to paper piecing. I love the accuracy of it and the methodical way it is put together.
ReplyDeleteJust the thought of paper piecing seems daunting. I'm actually afraid to try it. Maybe I need such a book to motivate me. :)
ReplyDeleteI have been intimidated with the Karen Stone spires but took a workshop with her last summer and it was so fun and she is a hoot! Wonderful teacher. I just finished 24 of her Lady Liberty blocks and it was not the terror I had imagined. Now on to the longer spire borders. If you have the opportunity to take a workshop with her, she takes the mystery and terror out of it and gives you all the details to make it a success! Thank you, Karen!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to learn how to make curvy flying geese! I'm working on a baby NY Beauty. PP isn't my favorite method yet, but I'm working on it. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI have done some paper piecing and like the results. Thanks for a chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI have done some paper piecing and I really love it. My next adventure is to try some free form work. I also make my own paper pieces for half sq. triangles so I can just move along with scrap squares of all different sizes.
ReplyDeleteI've never paper pieced but I've read a lot about it. I think my first project will either be a spiderweb... If those are paper pieced, I can't remember.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
I learned to paper piece successfully thru Jodi Davis on a quilt cruise. She was a wonderful teacher.

ReplyDeleteI paper pieced my shoe quilt. I'd love to win!
ReplyDeletePaper piecing is great as long as the pieces are not to small...then it can be a bit tedious to me. But I love the precision! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI've made portions of some blocks using paper piecing. They were simple though. I would enjoy this book because it has the flying geese used in innovative ways. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI have had gail Garber's block in my design mind for a long time! Love those crved flying geese!!!
ReplyDeleteI was having trouble making small quilt blocks I use for coaster so I decided to give paper piecing a try and I loved it. Hope to do more. nanasew at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteThis book has been on my Amazon list for a while now. I've tried paper piecing, but that's about it!
ReplyDeleteI took a Karen Stone course, made one block, bought the book, and haven't picked it up since. I know I will, but just not now. Kathie L in Allentown
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of paper piecing and really want to try it. . . you know, in all my free time. :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy paper piecing and do it often. My last project was a cardinal and now I'm working on chickens. Thanks for a great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently paper piecing a Hunter's Star quilt for a friend of mine. Just bought some more Carol Doak paper for the project. Am sure there will be some left over for my next project, so would love the book.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lot of fun challenges in the book - would love to win and try them out!
ReplyDeleteoh cool book! I sort of like paperpiecing, right now I am struggling with a pp wine glass, I am NOT going to let it defeat me! (well, hopefully not)
ReplyDeleteI finished a project that had 7 paper-pieced trees in it. It pretty near drove me crazy at first, but once I got the hang of it, I was fine. In fact, I have forgotten enough of the frustration to start thinking I should try it again...
ReplyDeleteThe quilt on the book cover is pretty amazing!
Have made a few angel blocks by paper piecing. The results were amazing. Would so enjoy to learn more!
ReplyDeleteI love what you can do with paper picing. Haven't done it for a while, but have done lots of birds, especially on purses.
ReplyDeleteI went to a paper-piecing class and absolutely HATED it! I have never been so dad-blamed frustrated in my life. I walked away from it and said I would never, ever, EVER do paper-piecing again. That was about 4 years ago. And then about 4 months ago, my daughter told me she would like to have a calendar quilt. And she had found one she really loved. I almost told her NO. But this daughter never asks for anything. Never. So what did I do? I told her I must love her more than anything in the world, because the thing I hate most was paper-piecing, but I would make this quilt for her. And did I mention the one she found was a wall hanging, but she wants her lap size? Yeah, fun huh??? And did I mention, I'm still kinda new to quilting and don't know a lot about what I'm doing?? So, I've got the 12 paper-pieced "months of the year" finished. They now need to be measured and trimmed. Then we need to figure out how much fabric I need when she decides on the sashing, borders, backing and binding. I'll be glad when it's over. And I finally overcame my fear of paper-piecing. After a lot of ripping and cussing.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE paper piecing. I have done several seasonal projects as well as a New York Beauty wall hanging in black and white. I don't have any paper piecing projects right now so I could use some new inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove to win this book. Have never tried paper piecing, but have hexagons on my 'to try this year' list. Thank you for the chance.
ReplyDeleteI do paper piecing in spurts, and when I do some, I do a lot. I like the exactness (when I'm in the mood for exactness).
ReplyDeleteI've never done paper piecing. I love freeform and am more interested in individually created blocks as opposed to those that are all the same...
ReplyDeleteI use paper piecing often and my present project is a Railroad Crossing; arcs and geese both. Sometimes I use it just to get accurate seam allowances on simple projects.
ReplyDeleteThe only paper type piecing I have done is string quilts on a paper foundation. I enjoy it but haven't tried anything else yet. I've seen some gorgeous quilts that I'd like to try though.
ReplyDeleteThis book looks great!
The little bit of paper piecing I have done, I enjoyed. I would like to do more. This book looks very interesting!
ReplyDeleteI love this book and bought it recently to read on the plane! Whoever wins it will have so much fun getting inspiration!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've done a little paper piecing, but it has been a while. It did make for nice, even points on triangles.
ReplyDeleteI learned the technique years ago but regrettably I haven't done much with it - this book looks interesting enough to change that...
ReplyDeleteI made a mystery quilt which had a border made up of X and Y blocks which were all paper pieced. I've also made a couple of wall hangings using Carol English's method of paper piecing. I like paper piecing and think the results are fabulous, but I don't do it often.
ReplyDeleteI love paper piecing. I have not done it in a while, but it is addicting once I get started.
ReplyDeletea-ha! i think i could go for such a moment ..... i'm having a problem or two this time 'round on my current project. i''m beginning to think a book in hand is worth a thousand online intsructions.
ReplyDeleteI made my first paper pieced block about 3 months ago and have been hooked ever since. I LOVE it. I am working on a quilt now full of paper pieced buildings such as houses, barns, a school etc.
ReplyDeleteI use wash away on some of my appliques, does that count? LOL That really looks like a fun book.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
