Green Eyelash Wedding Ring Quilt

Lureca Outland of Boligee, Alabama made this wedding ring interpretation quilt in 1991. It's part of the current exhibit at the American Folk Art Museum. Helen and I searched to find "the block," but we couldn't. It's quite a puzzle to us how Lureca put this quilt together. Viewed from a distance, this bold colorful quilt is stunning.

Are the green triangles snowball corners on each block (that have an on-point square in the middle and the stripes sewn onto each edge?)

maybe it was sewn in diagonal rows, no block per se?

Just when you think you've found the block, you find that it can't be. I should have taken better close up photos to show this. I think it was pieced in a random way with no blocks.

Hi Karen. I think the block is the same as the one I used in my liberated selvage wedding ring quilt that you had on your blog last summer. Each ring is made up of 4 blocks-the striped part in the middle and the two triangles. This is a spectacular quilt!

This looks a lot like the block from Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran. The Liberated Wedding Ring....from their book together. {Together Again? something like that} Very pretty....love the green!

I think The Cozy Quilter has it! That is the block I see as well. This is one of the quilts on my "to do" list as I whack and sort scraps and strings into 8 different scrap quilt projects. THanks for posting this version with the green eys...I may need to rethink the tan fabric I had picked out!

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

If I were to make it I think I would make scrappy strip sets, then sub-cut, rectangles (4) and add tri corners, One of background and one alt color- make sets of four and re assemble into snowball block w/inner sq. haven't done the math to see sizes but should beable to do any size one wants.

starting with a scrappy strip set would give each 'ring' same/similar fabrics. jmho- cw

I saw these quilts when I was in NYC last weekend and I enjoyed them lots. Its sad to hear that museum is closing down. I didn't take any pix, so I'm glad you have them here.
