I tried one of these many years ago before I knew how to avoid ending up with a giant C-shaped thing! Haha.Now I'm patient enough to press each seam before adding the next strip. Also, sew in sections, then connect the sections. I still don't pin something like this. That's over-doing it!
This might be a cool group project where everyone sews a portion of the quilt top, say: 6" x 55." Six inches will be 7 strips. Do you want to make one and mail it to me? I'll turn it into a quilt and we'll have a Giveaway here. Wow, this whole idea developed as I wrote this post! Mail your "block" to me at 39 East Chestnut Hill Rd., Litchfield, CT 06759.
I'll show you my block tomorrow. Cut 1.25" strips x any length. You have to attach some to get to 55." No foundation necessary. These are not selvages, just regular fabric.

Are those selvage strips or just 1.25" strips and were they cut lengthwise to be 55" or cross wise and pieced?
Also, are they sewn on a foundation. I would like to make a section once I understand the process completely

I'm wondering if you added each skinny strip on to the next one sewing in opposite directions each time? I have read about doing that to prevent a curvature from forming. Perhaps your pressing guidelines in the next post prevent that. Thoughts? This is a great idea and I love Tonya's Legos as well.

We recently launched a new line of Cotton Solids that are 100% Made in America (americanmadebrand.com). I'm planning a blog tour thru each of the 50 states - "Travel the US! No Gas Required!". It involves designing a new license plate for your state, writing instructions for making it, blogging about it with a fabric giveaway (we'll provide) and then selling your block pattern (or offering as a free download).
Few things to help you envision:
- License plates are 12” W x 6” H, so that’s the size of everyone’s finished block. I’d want you to send me an unfinished block (12 ½” x 6 ½”) to make into a full 50 state show quilt.
- You can use whatever technique & tools you’d like but would need to use our cottons. I’ll send you each 13 x 7” cuts of our 50 solids to work with.
- My plan is to run the tour 2 states/day, M-F, in order of yr of statehood starting on 5/19.
Since you’re in Connecticut, state #5, would you be able to design a fun block for a 5/21 blog post?
