This weekend I found 4 beautiful vintage bowls at my church's Fall Festival that would be perfect for holding pins in your quilt studio. (Two are shown here. Each one is different.) So I'm having a give-away!

Here's the scoop:
1.) Help spread the word about my new Etsy store. Write a blog post, put something on Facebook or Pinterest.com, tell your neighbor, or take out an ad in Veranda magazine!
2.) Then leave a comment on this post and you'll be entered in the drawing. Four winners announced next Wednesday the 19th. You must live somewhere on Earth to enter.

Thanks for helping me get my new store on the map. Cyberspace is a big place!

Book Giveaway - Picture This by Marcia Stein

This fabulous book "Picture This" by Marcia Stein (published by C&T 2010) shows you how to make applique pictorial quilts from your favorite photos. If you are a visual learner, you'll love all the "how-to" photos.

Marcia gives lots of inspiration to help you get a photo that will make a stunning quilt. She shows examples of how she has added or deleted elements to make a design better. The process of enlarging the image and creating the quilt is made simple. Lots of fabric ideas too. At first I was just curious about how they make these cool quilts, but after casually reading this book, I'm thinking it would be fun to make one. I think I would like Marcia too. :)

Enter a comment for a random drawing and this book may soon be in your mailbox. Tell us how your new year is going so far.

Pinky's Looking for Adventure - Giveaway Today

Pinky has been living in a storage box for a year, and now she wants to travel. She was looking out the window this morning when I took her picture. As her mom, I want to make sure she goes to a good home, you know, a quilter's home. Can you resist those eyes? She says her best features are her 3 stegasaurus thingys on her back, her fancy pants, and she's very loyal. Oh, and she's reminding me that she has a great sense of humor too.

So leave a comment for the random drawing. I hope you're having a good week closing out the old year.

Book Giveaway - Kool Kaleidoscope Quilts

I'm really excited about Ricky Tims' new book "Kool Kaleidoscope Quilts" published by C&T. First, he shows you the basic method summarized on two pages. Then each step is presented in detail. Basically, you sew fabric strips into strata, then cut triangles and kite shapes to create your big wedges. Take a look at the photos on the back cover, shown below.

Ricky has taught this method many times so the directions are clear as a bell. There are also many photos of inspirational quilts made by his students. He says he doesn't plan the quilt in advance; he just chooses fabrics he likes and lets the design develop. That's my kind of quilt! This looks like so much fun, and the quilts are gorgeous.

One thing though, this fellow chops up his selvages! What is he thinking? Somebody tell Ricky to trim off his selvages before cutting his fabric into strips, in case he wants to try selvage quilting. Some even have his own name on them! Haha.
.
If you get the chance to see Ricky's performance at a quilt show, don't miss it! It's wonderful.

GIVEAWAY - Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks - 3 Winners

The new collector's edition of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 2 will hit the stores on Tuesday. Leave a comment below to enter a drawing for a free copy. There will be 3 winners.

The block above is my contribution to this issue. It's called "Upcycle" which means, of course, making something cool out of "throw-away" stuff.

Selvage quilters can tell at a glance how to make this block, but to show the newbies, I took some in-process photos. Machine stitch along the bound edge of each selvage. The stitching is easy to see on the red selvage in the photo below.

I like the little boots on the Moda selvage. That's one of my favorites.

Trim the block as shown above. Make three more, then sew them together, as shown below.

Add a selvage to the top and the bottom of the block, and then add one to each side. I think it will look really interesing when all the blocks go together. The long selvages will appear as if they're woven together. So far, I've only made one block, so this is just speculation.

I like the soft shaggies on the Moda acorn selvage below.

I was delighted to see another block in this book that included a selvage. Patty Young designed both the fabric and the block design for "Flutter." Isn't the hummingbird shape nice? Great colors too.

Okay, here they are, ready to be mailed to three lucky winners who will be chosen by our friend Mr. Random Number Guy. So leave a comment.

Wasn't it interesting to read about what we quilters wear (or don't wear) on our little feet when we sit down at the sewing machine? Who knew?
