Selvage Postcards with Rick Rack

Kay M. Peterson (from the Midwest, USA) made these pretty selvage postcards with a dash of rick rack. Her blog is called My Olive Branch because she assumes she'll eventually annoy all the readers, and the title is her official and continuing apology. Are you getting the idea that she's one hilarious quilter? You're right.

Selvage Postcard from the Yukon Territory!

This postcard was made by Janet in the Yukon Territory and she mailed it to me! It arrived just fine, Janet. Even the stamp is still attached. The postmark says "Whitehorse, YT." Wow, something from the wild Northern frontier in my little hands. Thank you very much.

Janet won a package of selvages from me a while back and she used some for this, her second selvage project. Her first project was a postcard for her sister, made from the selvages of old fabric their mother had before she died 8 years ago. Isn't that a sweet idea? Now Janet's planning her next selvage project, a quilt. I can't wait to see it.

Sometimes when I tell people I graduated from U Conn, they say "Way up there? Wasn't it cold?" "Not too bad," I say. "You get used to it." Haha. Yeah, I'm pretty rugged.

Pam's Selvage Postcard

Pam Geisel from Ohio is a quilter who makes a wide variety of quilts, so of course she also uses her selvages! This is a selvage covered postcard. Did you know they travel through the mail just fine? Really. I've been lucky enough to get a few.

Selvage Birthday Card Among Janiacs

Anya of Wellsboro, PA just made this postcard for Rita, a quilting friend who's having a birthday soon. They're both "Janiacs" (Dear Jane quilt aficianados) so the fabrics are very appropriate.

Anya has taken the first step toward making a Dear Jane Selvage Quilt: thinking about it, and saying what a dumb idea it is! We've seen this kind of thing before. That's how I started my selvage lamp.

The Perfect Card

Joan Jordan made this very cute selvage postcard. Here's what she had to say about it:

Mona Norhave - A Quilter in Denmark

Mona Norhave in Denmark got a handfull of small selvages from her fabric shop (3-6" long) and her challenge was to make something with them. I like how she arranges her selvages, and the addition of the buttons and ribbons on the pin cushions is so nice. Good job, Mona! Now she's waiting for her package of selvages from the Fabric Square Shop. This should be interesting!

Selvage Cards from Germany!

Monika Schiffgen of Germany made these very creative selvage postcards. What a nice job she did piecing and embellishing! I think she and her quilting buddies are exchanging them, but I don't read German so I don't know for sure!

New Postcard from Cozy Quilter

This is Cozy Quilter's first selvage project. She made it for a quilted post card exchange that her guild does every month. If you put a post card in the "mailbox" at the guild meeting, you will receive a post card made by someone else about a week after the meeting. She has quite a collection of postcards made by other members of the guild.

I really like the rabbit on this card, and see the "Rabbit Factory" selvage below it? I think someone will be delighted to receive this one!

Easter Card from Martina!

Martina Odenthal of Cologne, Germany sent me this charming selvage card for Ester. It has her trademark tape measure, and a delightful little bunny. She wrapped it in bubble wrap for the overseas trip. Check out the lace along the selvage edge! That's the first time I've seen lace added to a selvage arrangement. Very clever, Martina!

Greetings to all the visitors from Lithuania today! (over 50 already) My father's parents were from Lithuania. My grandmother sometimes took care of me when I was a toddler and I learned to speak Lithuanian a little. We used to make ausukes (little ears). Delicious!

Writing on Selvage Postcards

You already know that Anya writes on her selvage postcards. Here's how she does it: First she sews the selvage down using a straight stitch, then she programs her Bernina to stitch her message using the alphabet feature. So simple. What an ingenious idea!

Carla Barrett made these pretty tulips using selvages that were given to her by a friend who dyes her own fabrics. Carla has been using selvages for years. I like shaggy selvages, and these are definitely the shaggiest I've ever seen! And check out all the quilting on this postcard!

Anya of Wellsboro, PA made these personalized postcards for her friends who just celebrated birthdays. The first two are for Dear Jane enthusiasts, and the third is for a friend who loves brights. They have supplied her with lots of selvages, so I suspect they may be seeing some of their own selvages again! lol. Great idea, Anya!

Woven Selvage Postcard by Vicki Welsh

This cheerful woven selvage postcard was created by Vicki Welsh who lives near Richmond, VA. It was made for a swap that had a recycle theme. The flower fabrics came from old tee shirts. I like how she made the center of the flower using lots of thread.

Vicki says she is obsessed with anything involving fabric and thread. (You're among friends here Vicki!) She has 120 teacup hooks in a closet where she stores the most beautiful collection of handmade ornaments. You have to see it. She is funny, too.

June Calender's Selvage Postcards

June Calender of NYC is on a selvage postcard-making binge! Take a look at these fairy tale theme prints surrounded by selvages (in a modified courthouse steps arrangement). What a fun idea.

Two New Ideas from June Calender

June Calender of New York City is busy making selvage postcards. This project was inspired by a postcard that she received from Sam Farman of Perth, Australia. (Sam and her selvage postcards have been featured here on the Selvage Blog.)

First, June tried weaving her polka dot selvages (new idea #1). Next, she arranged her selvavges horizontally. Finally, she put a fabric with a picture on it in the center, then surrounded it with selvages (new idea #2, not shown). I think that's a great idea for a selvage quilt. My log cabin has solid red center squares, but I like the idea of using novelty prints in that spot. Thanks, June.

Australian Postcards by Linda Robertus

Linda Robertus (from the Netherlands, living in Australia) featured her Australian fabrics in these pretty postcards. I love the Aboriginal designs made up of all those dots. Framed Selvages

Take a look at this framed selvage arrangement made by Elena McDowell. This colorful rainbow of selvages is surrounded by a black and white frame made with newspaper, and upon close inspection: Chinese newspaper! This is a real treat for a font lover like me.
