Sewing Angel Travels the World

Julz in Australia made this whimsical little sewing angel with selvage wings for a doll swap. See the thimble necklace and the scissors on her skirt? This angel is well loved by her new family in Austria. See more on Julz's blog: http://www.simplestitches1.blogspot.com/.

If you were a quilt, what would you look like?

Have you thought about it? This is the first quilt challenge for the new Online Quilt Museum. Click here for all the details. Hardly any rules. You have 'till the end of October. The clues are in your stash. So, when you're driving or taking a shower, whenever you do your best thinking, think up a quilt that looks like "you." Not a portrait necessarily, but a quilt that your friends would say, "Oh, that is so you!"

Great Idea for Quilt-Giving

Jill Bunis of New Jersey made this pretty quilt for her cousin's daughter Sophie. I love how she tied a ribbon around this quilt. What a beautiful presentation! Isn't that elegant?

I'm going to remember to do this the next time I give someone a quilt.

This Quilt (Block) Needs a Name

I recently made these two blocks after seeing an awesome collection of blocks made by Brenda and her friends in Manitoba, Canada. You can see theirs on Brenda's blog: http://www.scrapsandstrings.blogspot.com/. (Scroll down a bit, it's not brand new.)

Brenda got the idea from: http://www.sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=2311. In Amanda Jean's tutorial, she makes the quilt sandwich first, then the piece is quilted as she sews the patches on. She was making a doll quilt. With my blocks, I just sewed the patches to the foundation. Sandwiching and quilting later. My quilt will be larger and it will have a border.

I thought this would make a great Block of the Month for my guild, Empire Quilters. But I need a good name. "Raw-Edge Mosaic Collage" is too generic and boring. I want something more fun. Any ideas?

To see the directions, visit my other blog: http://www.empirebom.blogspot.com/. Basically, you just cut a 12" square from white or off-white fabric. Cut your patches, use a gluestick to adhere, then machine topstitch. Do you think this should be regular needle-turn applique instead of raw-edge? I think I'll finish it and wash it before deciding.

These two blocks were so much fun to make. This quilt could use a few good selvages too, don't you think?

Julie's Selvage Placemats

Julie in Memphis, TN made these improvisational selvage placemats. I love the colors and the surprises in the layout. She has a great post on her blog: http://www.quiltdivajulie.blogspot.com/ telling how she used her "liberated quilting" mindset to problem-solve. She included lots of photos too.

It's a scorcher in the US today! Do you have any room Down Under for some US quilters for the weekend? Wouldn't that be fun?

Selvage Shade Pull

Sharyn made this little shade pull by covering a cookie cutter with selvages. She uses it on the window of their RV. Are selvage quilters clever or what?

Check out Sharyn's blog at: http://www.kalamaquilts.blogspot.com/. She's a needleslinger and wordsmith in Southwest Washington state.

Adrienne Weber's Selvage Runner

Meet Adrienne Weber from Stallings, NC. Isn't this a stunning selvage runner? I like that white binding; it blends right in with the selvages. I also like how she sprinkled some dark selvages in there to gently highlight the diamond pattern. Bravo!
Adrienne is originally from the north fork of Long Island. She learned to quilt from Carol Barnes of The Textile Company in Greenfield (MA). Her daughters are quilters too; one even had a quilt in the Hoffman Challenge traveling exhibit! Adrienne is a member of the Charlotte Quilt Guild, and the York County Quilters in SC.
Special thank you to quilter Drenna Hannon for taking the photos.

Origami Roses

This photo is from "The Gift of Gifts" photostream on www.flickr.com. These are paper origami roses. I'd like to see how to make these. Incorporating origami in a quilt would be interesting. Have you tried it?

Jacqui's Selvage Thread-Catchers

Jacqui from Canada made these little selvage bags to keep near her sewing machine for catching threads and little scraps. The pin cushion at the top is filled with plastic pellets so it stays on the table. Very nice job, Jacqui! You can get a closer look at her selvage arrangements on her blog: www.treadlequilts.blogspot.com. Tomorrow you'll see what her friend Gail made with selvages.

Happy Birthday to Britta in Germany

This beautiful collection of selvage placemats was made for Britta in Germany by her quilting friends: Martina, Sabine, Claudia, Hanna and Gisela. Birgit gave Britta some beautiful blue and purple hand dyed fabrics. They also made selvage cards. (You can see the placemat and card that Martina made in the photo below.)

Britta had to wait until her birthday to open her gifts. She had an idea that there were selvages in those soft packages. Her friends included extra selvages to get her started on her next selvage projects. Even Britta's husband likes the new placemats. He's known as DH in English and German! Haha.

Yes, readers, I fed two blogs into Google Translate, paragraph by paragraph, to get you this heartwarming story of selvages and quilterly friendship. To see more photos, visit Britta's blog at: http://www.quilt-girlie.blogspot.com/. You can also see Martina's blog at: http://www.stufenzumgericht.blogspot.com/.

Happy birthday to Britta from all the quilters here at the Selvage Blog!

Fantastic Selvage Spiderweb Quilt

This beautiful little selvage spiderweb quilt was made by Cindy at liveacolorfullife. She made this for Jennifer as part of a swap on flickr. See the name "Jennifer" in the blue selvage in the bottom photo? Nice touch. I love this design, the quilting, and the striped binding. Great selvages, too. It's perfect. See Cindy's blog at: http://www.aroundtheblockdesigns.blogspot.com/ and: www.sewingontheedge.etsy.com.
.
If you haven't seen all the amazing quilts on flickr, you're in for a nice surprise. Go to http://www.flickr.com/ and sign up. It's easy and free. Then enter "quilting" in the "Find a Group" box. There are even some selvage quilting groups.

Jaybird's New Spiderweb

Julie of http://www.jaybirdquilts.blogspot.com/ has started a new selvage spiderweb quilt. She was inspired by Jacquie's (http://www.tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com/) awesome spiderweb. Jacquie used a pale teal, which I thought was perfect. But now I like this too! It's Kona's light lime bella, 9900 100. Lots of fresh new fabrics in there. I like the row of question marks on the bottom right. This is going to be beautiful!

Vietnamese Craft has Selvage Look

I bought this little square coaster on a recent trip to Block Island, Rhode Island. It was made in Vietnam using magazine pages and glue. It measures 4" x 4" and it's 1/4" thick. I paid $5. I've seen similar items for sale in museum shops. I think it has a look similar to that of selvages lined up together. Do you agree?

Interesting writing shows up a little bit. Several languages, it looks like. I don't see any English.

No-Stitch Fabric Swap (flickr)

These little bits of woven selvage art were made by "fatquarter" for a No-Stitch Fabric Swap. She posted this photo on her photostream on http://www.flickr.com/. Participants were not allowed to use a needle. No problem for her, just pull out the stapler! Nice job, Ms. Quarter.

Did you know that there are lots of selvage quilters on flickr? There are two groups that specialize in selvages. Just type "selvage quilts" in the "Find a Group" box, and you'll be able to click on over and visit. Have fun.
