Knotted Binding?

I'm curious about this knotted quilt binding! I found this photo on 10Marifet, but it didn't tell how-to.
Guzellestirin means "beautify" in Turkish. Well, I knew that from the photos! :)
I would guess you make the knots, then line them up side-by-side and sew them onto a narrow foundation strip. Then insert the strip into a knife-edge binding and top-stitch? I need to give this a try. Any advice?

Piqued my curiosity so did some investigating. Picture is from an ad from Zara Home online store, August 2010. Your picture links to this blogger. http://blog.caitlinwilson.com/zara-deals/ Found this knot that might be interesting on your quilt. http://www.threadsmagazine.com/assets/uploads/posts/4443/117-fabric-buttons-02.jpg And red pepper quilts has nice tut for no binding quilts. http://www.redpepperquilts.com/2011/09/quilt-without-binding-tutorial.html. That was fun. Can't wait to see what your quilt looks like!

I have never seen this before! I would be sure to leave enough flat "tail" on each knot to insert into edge to avoid going crazy with not catching it all in the stitching. You might be able to skip the narrow strip and sew knots directly onto one right side of quilt edge (like sewing ric rac trim, before turning and topstitching) but to try to sew into both front and back of quilt at once and catch all the layers would be impossible- for me at least! Using a narrow strip would mean just sewing with the knots and fabric and not wrestling with an entire quilt and would be easier, as long as you hid all raw edges when you did sew into the quilt edge. I can't envision an "easy" way to do this, get the knots to be uniform, etc. but it is intriguing! How neat to see a design element that is truly unique! You could use selvages for your knots!

It is intriguing and to me it looks as tho there is cording between the knots and the body of the quilt. I would treat this as I did with Prarie points and baste them to a 1/2" strip of fabric which then can be sewn into the quilt layers. Do you reckon the knots are a knit fabric as there doesn't appear to be any 'strings or threads'. Very interesting. What a wonderful adventure this could lead you on.

What a cool binding treatment! I think it would finish off one of your scrappy quilts perfectly. Give it a go and let us know how it goes, Karen. Always love visiting your blog!
