Spools of Thread Emptied in 2017

Another year of quilting and clergy stole-making emptied 23 spools of thread.
I use Coats & Clarks All Purpose thread.
When I get around to machine quilting my ufo quilt tops, then you'll see a real pile of empty spools! But I don't know if that will happen in 2018. We'll see.
I hope you have a wonderful year of quilt-making!

I ended up with 25 empty spools - a combination of sewing and quilting thread. I bought a big vase last year and now have dumped all the empty spools from the last 5 or 6 years in it. Why? I have no idea, I just couldn't get myself to throw the empty spools away. LOL!! I posted pictures on my blog and so far no one has commented with a use for the empty spools or that I might be losing my mind.

Wow, that is a lot of empty spools! I've never kept track because I always give them to my sister for her elementary students. I'll have to jot down the number this year. Here's wishing you another year of spool emptying!

I am waiting for the day that thread manufacturers make the spools out of something we can recycle. I'd like to know what Wendy Caton Reed's sister does with them with her school students.

Karen, I was shocked the last time I took my sewing machine in for a minor repair, (in a quilt fabric shop on the Cape). The man noted I had a spool of Coats & Clark thread on the machine. He told me to stop using it; said it once was a good brand but now is weak and doesn't stand up under regular quilting, although they carry some in the shop for hand quilters. Someone else in the shop spoke up and said, as I had just said "I've used it for year." Frankly, I'm not sure about his advice and I'm certainly not throwing out any thread I have. You do a LOT of sewing, have you had problems?

I have never had any problems with Coats & Clark thread. But I've heard the occasional person get quite enthusiastic about using fancier (more expensive) thread.
Anyone else want to chime in?

I would recycle spools if they still were made of wood. Ahh, the good old days... Now I use Aurifil for hand and machine. It costs more, but it seems to go farther.

Type 'cotton reel decorations' into your computer and take a look at some of the wonderful ideas that come up to use them
