Selvage Blocks by Lois Cox

Lois Cox of California (Bay Area) made these sample selvage blocks, 

then decided to make the sheep quilt first.

She's making more sheep and she'll add the words: "Counting Sheep to Sleep." 

Such a clean and cute shape for the little guys.

Lois does it all! Applique and piecing. She was having a very creative day! Nice job Lois!

Meet Bari J.

Bari J. is the author of a new book published by C & T, "Inspired to Sew." I took a look at her blog and was so impressed with her style, that I had to show you some photos of her work. The machine applique above includes a little selvage - now that's high style indeed! Visit her blog and see the pretty blue hexagon quilt.

Bari J (the J is for Jill) is also into quilts, collage, jewelry, handbags, crafts and clothing. She has designed three lines of fabric. Bari J likes to create patterns for vintage looks for modern women. Is that jumbo ric-rac in the quilt below?

She has such a unique style. I really like this. Can't wait to see the book. Has anybody seen it?

More Selvage Bags from Fernanda in Portugal

Today we're looking at more creative selvage bags by Fernanda Gomes of Portugal. Above and below, she uses selvages and ribbons sparingly to add little messages and design flair.

I have a warm place in my heart for "Dick, Jane and Sally" (see the fabric on the left in the photo below) because I learned to read using that series of books. Somehow, reading "Run, run, run." wasn't boring, it was reassuring. :) I like the little cartoons on the pink background too.

Using selvages this way is so clever. I like the light and airy look she has created. And look at those handles!

Having a small selvage stash is no longer a reason not to make a selvage bag.

Wonderful job, Fernanda! Thank you for all the inspiration. It makes me want to head to my sewing machine right now.

Meet Fernanda Gomes from Portugal!

Fernanda Gomes from Portugal has made a stunning collection of selvage bags. These 4 bags were made by applying selvages and fabric squares with machine zig-zag stitching. What a creative idea!

Fernanda has such a carefree improvisational style! Bravo, Fernanda! I like the fabric with the little Russian dolls (on the white background above, and on the brown background 2 photos up).

Selvage Applique by Debra Posthumus

Debra Posthumus of Terre Haute, Indiana created these delightful selvage applique designs. She bought the blue fabric (a shirt) at a garage sale for 50 cents, and she got 8 embroidery hoops at a church sale for $1. And of course, the selvages were absolutely free!

Debra likes the bird (above) the best, and she uses it in the header for her blog: www.quiltchicksrule.blogspot.com.

I think my favorite is the house and tree. The shapes are just right, and I like all the selvages. I like how the door stands out.

The line, "I love cake" is from an episode of "That 70's Show."

Even though the photo below is a little washed out, I wanted to show you the teacup. The steam looks like question marks to me. And I love that tea tag. Nice job, Debra!
