Fan Quilt Imitates Selvage Quilts

I just finished this fan quilt and noticed that it looks a lot like a selvage quilt. First I cut a ton of one-inch strips from my 1940-1970's era stash. Then (without using a foundation) I sewed the strips together starting with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, then gradually increasing to a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Doing this with each added strip produces the fan effect. After piecing, press flat then using a square template, trim. The border is made of small fans. I love this busy quilt.

Oh my gosh I am so so jealous. It's fabulous (hmmm I have tons of skinny strips). Great job. Thanks for sharing.

I love your blog ... it's always so interesting and diverse.

I forgot to ask ... did you blindly sew or plan each strip? And what's the size of the fans?

WOW! I don't think I have the scraps or the patience yet, to sew all those teeny strips together, BUT it is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!

hi there...just found this quilt and am in love. I am a scrap quilter and most of my projects use scraps that others would consider too small. I know that you posted this quite some time ago but I have a question...what size are your blocks and what size is your finished project? I would love to try this for sure. Happy New Year!!

Hi Karen,
Did you start sewing from the center of the block and outward? How long was the strip that you work with? Got to try this. Your quilt is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
