Let's keep an eye out for quilts in movies!
I'll go first: There are some quilts/crocheted blankets in Charlie Bucket's grandparents' bedroom in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. (The old one, not the newer version with Johnny Depp.) Maybe also the Hobbit or a Harry Potter movie?
I know there are lots more, I just can't remember which movies! Do you have any favorites?

Don't know why in the world I remember this, but there are quilts in the movie Arachnophobia! Guess I'd rather look at quilts than spiders - ha!
Movies-Stepmom, with Susan Sarandon, Groundhog Day in the B&B, The Holiday; TV shows- The Waltons, Army Wives, As Time Goes By.
You'e Got Mail - Meg's Ryan's character has a couple in her home.
And of course the movie: How to make an american quilt :)
I found this link on the net telling about several others:

The Horse Wisperer had a lovely blue & white antique quilt.
Diane Keaton's house in the Hamptons in SOMETHINGS GOTTA GIVE and the hexagon crocheted blanket on the back of the sofa in THE SUPERHERO MOVIE with Leslie Neilson. I have always wanted to make a huge hexy quilt since I saw that yarn one.
Por supuesto, los que aparecen en el dormitorio de los niños en "La niñera Mágica", son muy "retro" y en la pelicula Jumanji, aunque aparece solo por unos segundos.
There is an amazing quilt in Sleepy Hollow - with Johnny Depp on it to boot :)

I just saw the new movie Descendents with George Clooney, there is a yellow and white Hawaiian style quilt first seen on the wife in a coma in the hospital and at the end shared by the family as they settle on the sofa to eat ice cream. BTW, it's a very good movie.
I always loved the pinwheel quilt in the TV show "As Time Goes By". Of course there's the quilt in "How to Make an American Quilt" as well.
There's a quilt in the classic movie Bells of St. Mary's. Someone in my on-line quilt group noticed it a couple years ago. They liked it so much they hunted down a still from the movie showing the quilt, and we drafted the pattern for her!
There's a nice nine-patch in The Shipping News and some awesome examples in Nanny McPhee.
In "Sleepless in Seattle" Meg Ryan has a yo-yo quilt on her table as a tablecloth.
My husband and I recently watched the 2003-2004 HBO series Carnivale, which takes place during the Great Depression. Some amazing quilts, and I'm still so sad the series didn't continue.
There´s a nice string quilt in "Overboard" with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (on the armchair).
And in "You´ve got Mail" there is one on Meg Ryan´s bed.
And if granny square blankets count, too: Roseanne! :-)
Bella's mother gives her a t-shirt quilt from their vacations in the second Twilight movie..
I have the full set of Dr Quinn Medicine Women and there a re plenty in that, in fact in one scene to my horror she uses one to put a fire out!!!
Little House on the Prairie is another....I this set as well, love these!
Little Women has nice ones too.
When Zuzu is in her bed, I think she has a quilt, and there's a quilt on the honeymoon bed, too. You know "It's a Wonderful Life!"
There is a tattered-but-still-beautiful crazy quilt of velvets and satins in the Harry Potter movie where they are exploring inside Sirius Black's house (next to last movie?)
:) Linda
I just posted on my blog about a quilt that I found in a movie. I have been keeping track for a while. I found one when watching the Bells of Saint Marys
I took a photo of the screen
http://teriquilts.blogspot.com/2011/12/christmas-is-coming-quickly.html
Also, I made a pattern of a quilt that I saw in the movie Christmas with the Kranks. It was a red and white quilt they kept running past that was hanging on their hallway wall. Another old Christmas movie called " A Gift of Love" with Lee Remik and Angela Landsbury had a quilt on the bed. I try to pause the TV and snap a photo when I run across a quilt in a Movie. Sometimes it is hard to figure out what the pattern might be.
Of course, my favorite is "How to make An American quilt! ANd I thought I was the only quilter who spotted quilts in movies and TV shows too!
Irene
Seems to me I recall a few tattered quilts in the movie 'Annie'... but I just saw a recent stage adaptation too, so I might be confusing that with the movie.
I think I remember a really great scrap quilt (19th century?) on the bed in one of the scenes of "Annie Hall".
Was just watching this weeks Prime Suspect (tv show) and on the wall behind the bed of someone they were arresting was a great quilt - had a celtic applique knot in the middle and a checkerboard border all around.
I am always delightfully distracted by quilts in movies. Just watched Annie Hall again and noticed the quilt in the bedroom scene. Love it!!!
You all forgot about "Witness" with the Amish quilting and quilts with Harrison Ford.
Wasn't Harrison shirtless in Witness?? No wonder I forgot about the quilts.
There is a quilt in star trek insurrection believe it or not.
In the tv series ' Six Feet Under' I notice a really beautiful cream quilt with soft warm pastel squares and very simple quilting. I fell in love with this quilt and tried to copy the pattern while freezing the picture. Interestingly, the continuity people must have not taken their job very seriously, because the quilt first appeared at one house and then in a later series it appeared in a different person's room. Of course, I spotted it - it is such a beautiful quilt.
I too noticed the quilt hanging on the wall in the TV show Prime Suspect. I love this show, but this quilt grabbed my attention - lovely Irish chain with center medallion. Another favorite TV show is the British sitcom As Time Goes By. They have a pinwheel quilt on their bed that I admire everytime there's a bedroom scene.
There are quilts in the first Nanny Mcphee movie.
In "New In Town" Renae Zellweger wraps up in a really beautiful quilt when she wakes up in her freezing Minnesota home. It's a good movie!!
And I also love the Amish wool quilt that Diane Keaton has hanging on her wall in "Babyboom".
I've probably watched it 50 times, and I always have to pause it to zoom in on the quilt.
Beetlejuice- Grandmother Flower Garden near the beginning of the movie.
I just watch "Groundhog Day" and there is hideous wall hanging quilt
that has checkered blocks alternated with appliqued ground hogs. Also one on the bed in Bill Murrays room that is nice and scrappy...Irish Chain maybe.
Oh look now I see Quiltchick already said Groundhog day.
Happy Sewing
Hello Karen. I am just getting caught up on my blog reading after being out of commission for 6 weeks after surgery. Here are a couple more movie quilts. 'Uncle Buck' - Tia, the teenage daughter, had a beautiful green, gold, and red pineapple log cabin quilt on her bed. 'Dances with Wolves' - the charater the late Robert Pastorelli played in the movie (same actor that was Eldon in Murphy Brown)had a very worn patchwork quilt he slept under out on the open pairie.
Just saw The Descendants starring George Clooney. In the final scene there is a well loved Hawaiian quilt that they snuggle under on the sofa.
If television counts, there was a beautiful quilt hanging on the wall in the Press Secretary's (Allison Janney aka CJ Cregg) office of "West Wing".
I've been watching The Walking Dead and there is a quilt in it. Crazy - I'm glad I'm not the only one to spot them too :)
Not forgetting the episode of Murder, She Wrote where Angela Lansbury goes off to buy a Amish quilt. My favourite is Stepmom though. I knew I couldn't be the only person to spot quilts in tv and film.
I think there is generally a quilt in EVERY movie. There are some exceptions, but I'm so quilt obsessed I nearly always spot a glimpse or two of them. The new tv seriest on TNT about the Hatfields and McCoys has some yummy ones - I wish I could see them fully!
I just saw Moonrise Kingdom--a wonderful and quirky movie. Several quilts to be seen on the beds of Suzy's parents.
Anne of Green Gables and also the two color quilt in the TV show Friends thrown over the couch.

There are quilts in the movie "Still Missing" which is based on Beth Gutcheon's novel of the same name.
There are quilts in the movie "Still Missing" which is based on Beth Gutcheon's novel of the same name.
My favorites:
"For richer or poorer" (Kirstie Alley&Tim Allen)
"Little house on the prairie"
"The first wifes club" (on Brendas bed)
I too look for quilts in movies and TV shows, but memory always lets me down unless I write it down. But I do watch The Young and The Restless, and in the coffee shop they have shown a paper pieced coffee cup hanging on the wall, and in the past one with paper pieced shoes......I have admired the shoe one, and even looked up the pattern.
gloria g. Hemingway, SC
There are quilts in Norma Rae in the scene when she gets home from jail and wakes the kids, there are quilts on their beds.
When Harry Met Sally - one on Meg Ryan's bed. Daryl Hannah wraps herself in one, and there are others in the house she rents in Roxanne.
just saw a couple of lovely ones in "Lincoln." But one of my favorites is is the HBO series #1 Ladies Detective Agency. Beautiful African fabrics. Can't remember which episode, but anyway you should watch them all. ALso some good Hawaiian quilts in "The Descendants." That's it for now!
My favorite movie in which a quilt plays a central role is "The Price of Milk," a little indie film. Wonderful story.
A group of ladies are sitting around quilting in Chinatown
Most recently in Lincoln.
Does anyone have a photo of the crotched bed cover/quilt on the little girl's bed in the first Nanny McPhee movie?
I'd really like to see a picture of this!
Has anyone said Kramer v Kramer? Theres a double wedding ring quilt in that one....
The proposal. The quilt has even a name: the babymaker!
Big Business. Love that film...
Doc Hollywood with Michael J. Fox - there is a wonderful courthouse steps quilt in the log cabin where he stays and another quilt - don' t know the pattern - he wraps up in.
I recently saw a rerun episode of the "Family Matters" TV show called "The Quilt" (Season 1 Episode 11 and seemingly pre-Urkel). The quilt in the story was a Crazy Quilt owned by the grandmother character in the series. It was said to be a family quilt that recorded the history of their family "going back 200 years".
The plot revolves around the oldest granddaughter holding a garage sale where she winds up selling the quilt before she knew its full provenance and even though her grandmother had told her not to include it in the sale.
In the end, the granddaughter tracks down the buyer (an antiques dealer) and gets the quilt back (after a tearful plea) and the family gathers around and the quilt's story is told and the quilt is handed down to the next generation.
Ironically, the episode resonated with me more now that I am a quilter (and know something about lost family quilts). If I had seen it at the time it aired, I don't know if I would have appreciated the story as much.
This is a fun thread!
I love the two or three quilts in Little Women, the nineties one with Winona Ryder. There's a dark wool one with salmon shoo fly pattern that is so simple and so pretty. I think there's another one that's dark with album pattern squares.
That one in Sleepy Hollow is really something. Burned into my mind!
I just saw Coal Miner's Daughter and there are a whole mess of quilts hanging in the first recording studio Loretta Lynn records in, to tamp down the sound--pretty ones!
There's a quilt or two in Ashley Judd's first serious movie Ruby in Paradise.
I've seen several places people say the Moonrise Kingdom quilts are HST pattern and string quilt. It's not a string quilt--it's Broken Dishes.
There's a quilt in Star Wars. JK!
Thanks for the fun reading and beautiful quilts!
As a child I remember a whole Ma & Pa Kettle movie involving a local show and the ensuing a quilt war. (I saw reruns of course... I'm not that old)
Terms of Endearment, several quilts including the one on Debra Winger's hospital bed. I believe the pattern is Swallows in the Window. It's a tied quilt.
After having seen the movie hundreds of times, it took seeing the new 3D version to see the Ocean Waves quilt in Wizard of Oz.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
It' a musical. In it the seven brides make dresses out of quilts and they do a song and dance in them. Flicsha
The descendants, how to make an American quilt, Stepmom
Stripes with Bill Murray. There is a quilt on the bed in his and his soon to be x-girlfriend's apartment. I had never seen the pattern before.
The Wedding Date with Debra Messing. There is a very cool low volume crazy patch quilt on the bed in the boat house.
Tender Mercies with Robert Duvall
When we saw the movie Lincoln in a theater, my sweetheart leaned over to me during a scene in which Tommy Lee Jones and his love were in bed and whispered, "Look at that quilt!" I guess living with a quilter has made an impression on him.
There are great quilts in Sookie's house in the TV show True Blood
I just watched Doc Hollywood with Michael J Fox and Woody Harrelson. Great log cabin quilt in one scene and very cute movie overall!
Preciosos quilts hawaianos en la película " Los descendientes" con George Clooney
In The Americans TV show the undercover Russian couple have a great quilt hanging above their bed. Takes place in the Reagan Cold War era. Guess it is supposed to add to their cover as real Americans.
There are some beautiful quilts in "Wild", with Reese Witherspoon. Some scrap quilts on beds, and a drop-dead gorgeous blue-and-white quilt hung on a wall. There's even a quilt on the mother's bed in the hospice.
My DH (good quilt husband that he is) just caught this one: in the Chris Guest improv movie " Best in Show" when the characters Stefan Vanderpool (Michael McKean) and Scott Dolan (John Michael Higgins) settle into their room in the Taft Hotel before the Mayflower dog show in PA with their Shi-Tzu "Miss Agnes", they decorate the room by hanging a beautiful (what looks like Batik) quilt on the wall (with nails, yikes!) above the head of their bed. Some great close ups of it too!!
Just saw the one in the Proposal. I think someone already mentioned this, but I have to say it is a really beautiful Pineapple Quilt. The grandmother in the movie (Bette White) calls it "The Babymaker". Also, I just saw The Premonition, and I think there was a Log Cabin in that one.
I just saw Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp. He his character had a beat up quilt made with blue and cream triangles in rows.
You've got mail - There was a quilt on Meg Ryan's character's bed.
Baby Boom with Diane Keaton has a wonderful Amish quilt early on in the movie. It's hanging on the dining room wall.
Just recently saw an oldie but a goodie! My DH and I were watching one of the few musicals he will admit to liking: "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" (MGM, 1954). If you look carefully, many of the skirts of the dresses (and one pinafore) for the "brides" (female leads after they are taken to the brothers homestead) are made of quilts!
According to the Trivia section for this movie on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb.com), "(costume) designer Walter Plunkett went to the Salvation Army, found old quilts and turned them into dresses." Yikes! I hope the ones he used were damaged cutter quilts and not really nice condition ones. I wonder if the movie studio still has those costumes in storage?
"The Americans" have a beautiful quilt hanging above their bed
Case 39 movie in the girls bedroom I need to find it
There are numerous quilts in the TV series "Yellowstone" mostly in the cowboys' bunkhouse. They are one-patch quilts and 9-patch quilts, not fancy. Monica has a nice quilt that looks like a "Sunshine and Shadow" quilt with pinks and a streak of black. Some Indian textiles too. I wouldn't recommend this as a family program (violence and foolish thinking), but the quilts are interesting.
I noticed that! Thank you for mentioning the movie "Roxanne"
Re the "Yellowstone" quilts: Yes! I immediately fell in love with the one that I call "Beth's Quilt". I guess I'm not the only one because there are a number of people on Etsy selling patterns and kits for making it, LOL!! It's a simple design and I have kitted up fabrics to make my own which I hope I can get made before Season 5 "resumes" in August!
