Also see Kathleen in CT's wonkified asterisks on flickr. I think they look great.
Now cut your square vertically and insert a strip. Press.

Isn't this looking great? And no triangles to measure!
You know what to do, right? Cut horizontally, insert, press. Now trim your block to it's original size, 6" square.
That last step assures that your blocks are all the same size. What do you think? Easy?

Man oh man! You weren't kidding on how easy it is! I spent far too much time trying to figure it out! I'm so confused because I wanna cut fabs but need to sort out my studio because the kids and I head for America next Monday! It's like, do I start it now and continue when I get back or just start when I get back??? Oh heck, maybe JUST ONE!! For now....
That looks so easy it makes me laugh! I think I will have to try it.
I want to play but I need my sewing machine. I really love this block.
Super, super block! One question -- looks like all the pressing is away from the center?
I'm not much into solids so while I appreciated the other pic of these blocks, it didn't motivate me till I saw this one with the polka dots and the black and white. LOVE IT! I have so many things I need to do but first off I wanna play with a couple of these blocks. Thanks!!
Hi Dorothy,
I think it looks nicer if all the seams are pressed toward the center. That makes the asterisk strips rise up just a bit.
The first strip I made (in the first photo) has the seams "open" but then I switched to pressing the seams toward the strips. Sorry for the confusion.
Play around with it and see what you like best. Have fun.
Oh my... this really looks so much easier and fun then I first thought! This is just the kind of motivation I need to get that mending/adding additional pockets to a jacket so I can get back to quilting. Thanks!!
Easy, Peasy! Can't wait to get started! LOVE it!
Karen, thanks very much for the mention in your post.
I can verify that this is a quick and fun block to make: I'm not a big patchworker (mostly do applique), but I can't stay away from the machine now!
I'm really looking forward to seeing photos of everyone's blocks and color choices. I keep thinking of other color combos I could have used--but I'm glad I stuck to my "old" fabrics to use them up.

This block looks like so much fun! And it's gorgeous!

I wanna play with a couple of these blocks. Thanks!!

This block is way fun! Would you mind if I show my quilting bee the online tutorial? I would like them to make these blocks for me during my month.
Thank you!
Wow! That block is gorgeous! I wandered onto your blog via Pat Sloan's FIU Challenge. I WILL FIU something this weekend but I think I just found yet another project! This may make its way into my guild's challenge quilt which has very challenging fabric and rules.
Fun block and great tutorial! Thanks so much - I have used it to make my "Bee Imaginative" swap blocks for Ryan.
Hey, I tried it and its pretty easy. Suggest you try a sample first.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I made a square today and loved it. I can't wait to make more. I'm in love!
May I ask a question? It seems as if the asterisk block SHOULD be symmetrical, but mine are not. On one side of the block the "arms" are offset from the other. Does this make sense? Is this how it should be or do I continue to do things wrong? (my second try) Thanks so much.
Thank you very much. Your images make the task look so easy.
